The Burke County Register of Deeds will be offering a Family History Time Capsule Event in honor of National Senior Citizen Day on Wednesday, August 21, 2019. This FREE event is offered to anyone age 55 and up at the Register of Deeds office located at 201 South Green Street. The Register of Deeds office is to the right of the courthouse. A morning session from 9:00am to 12:00pm and an afternoon session from 1:00pm to 4:00pm will be offered. Each session can accommodate 15 individuals.
The Register of Deeds office gets daily requests of family members trying to locate birth, death, and marriage licenses from individuals trying to research their family genealogy. Sadly, many loved ones have passed away and did not leave sufficient information for their children or other family members to locate their ancestors. This can be frustrating for those family members as they struggle to put the puzzle pieces of their family history together. We want to help family members capture their family heritage and history!
Attendees will receive a plastic storage container and materials to create their family tree, however, participants are encouraged to bring pictures and other items they wish to include in their time capsule. Suggested items include, but are not limited to the following: an item from their childhood, a letter to their family, a current dated coin, etc.
Mrs. Norman hopes that the community will take advantage of this opportunity to make something memorable to pass down their family history. To RSVP for this event or if you have questions about the event, please contact the Register of Deeds office at 828-764-9340.
