Students and Other Community Volunteers Make a Difference

Thank you to all who supported the Annual Lake James Cleanup on Saturday, March 23, 2019.

4.5 tons of trash and 30 tires were removed from the Burke County section of Lake James (Lake) and the roads surrounding the Lake.  A total of 205 people volunteered to help in this effort.  100 worked on the Lake and 105 worked removing trash from roadsides.

Thank you to the following businesses that supported this effort: Abele’s, Allstate- Morgan  Agency, Arby’s, Jay Asbury and Johnny on the Spot, Big Dawg Radio, Burger King, Chik-fil-A, Domino’s Pizza, Firehouse Subs, Lake James Grille, Lake James Outdoors and Dock Builders, Linville River’s End Campground, McDonald’s, Mimosa Boat Landing, the News Herald, Papa John’s Pizza, Republic Services, Rutherford Veterinary, and Wendy’s.

Thank you to Burke County DOT, Burke County’s Sheriff Department, the Community of Lake James, Inc., the Duke Energy Foundation, Foothills Correctional Institution, Lake James Area Wildlife and Natures Society chapter of the NC wildlife Association, Lake James Environmental Association, the Lake James State Park, and the Rostan Foundation.

Thank you to the 90 students who participated representing:  Appalachian State University, Freedom High School, Georgia Tech. University, and Hickory Christian Academy.

An impressive number of volunteers represented the following subdivision: East Shores, Holiday Shores, Laurel Pointe, and Mallard Cove.

All efforts of this Cleanup help to promote a cleaner Lake, which serves not only for recreation and tourism in Burke County but also for drinking water in Western NC.

Unfortunately some volunteers observed that the day after the Cleanup roads had already been littered with freshly used cans, bottles, and paper and plastic cups.   If you observe anyone littering in the area, please call to report the offender to the NC Department of Transportation’s Swat-A-Litterbug Program.  A report may be filed by calling NCDOT Customer Service Officer at 877-368-4968 or online at the NCDOT website.

We thank all who supported this Cleanup and urge everyone to strive to keep our roads and Lake free of litter all year.

Volunteers are now need on May 4, 2019 for the Annual McDowell County Lake Cleanup.  Please contact Matt Burniesen of Keep McDowell Beautiful at 828-652-8104 or Howard Morgan at  828-584-0876.

Thank you,

Howard Morgan
