Due to hazardous forest fire conditions, Commissioner Troxler issued an order to cancel all burning permits and prohibit open burning for many Western North Carolina counties including Burke. The order is effective from April 3, 2020 at 5 pm and will remain in effect until further notice.

In addition to the Commissioners Burning Ban, the Burke County Fire Marshal’s Office concurrently issued a Bum Ban for all outside burning including fires within 100 feet of  an occupied dwelling.

Pursuant to the North Carolina State Building Code, Fire Code 2018 edition:

307.1.1 Prohibited open burning. Open burning shall be prohibited when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous.

The local burning ban will run concurrent with the North Carolina Forest Service ban remaining in effect until further notice.

Please contact our office at 828-764-9320 with any questions concerning the ban.
