Vasectomy Counseling

Regional Vasectomy Program

The Regional Vasectomy Program, based at the Guilford County Department of Public Health, helps provide men with vasectomy services. This program, sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, is open to any male who is 21 years of age or older. The cost is on a sliding fee scale, based on family size and income, so that any man who wishes to obtain a vasectomy, regardless of income, is able to get one. This program is especially helpful for people who are uninsured or under-insured. The service is free for those who qualify. For more information on the Regional Vasectomy Program, or to make an appointment, call the program coordinator at 336-641-4718.

What is vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a permanent birth control method for men who do not want to father any more children and is one of the most effective means of birth control. It is a safe and simple surgical procedure.

What happens during the procedure?

Vasectomy is usually performed in an urologist’s office under a local anesthetic. The Regional Vasectomy Program contracts with board-certified urologists statewide. After surgery, there may be some bruising, swelling and discomfort. You will need to take a break from sex, exercise and heavy lifting for one week after your vasectomy.

Will I be sterile as soon as the procedure if over?

No, not right away. To make sure the surgery was successful, several samples of semen must be taken back to the urology practice where the surgery was performed to test for the presence of any sperm. Most physicians require two negative (no sperm seen) samples in a row before you are told you may stop using temporary birth control.

Does vasectomy prevent sexually transmitted infections?

While this surgery should make you unable to father children, it will not protect you from sexually transmitted infections. Always wear condoms unless you are in a committed relationship.

What can be done if I change my mind?

A reversal (vasovasostomy) can be performed, but the surgery is expensive, must be done in a hospital and may not be successful.
