Marriage License Application
In North Carolina the Register of Deeds is responsible for issuing marriage licenses. A marriage license that is issued by the Burke County Register of Deeds is valid to use in any county in the state of North Carolina. Both applicants must be present when applying for a marriage license. The license is valid for 60 days. Once the marriage ceremony is preformed the marriage license must be returned the office of Register of Deeds where the license was obtained to be placed on permanent public record.
Required Identification & Documentation
Identification
Applicants over 18 may use:
- Valid driver’s license
- Valid state-issued identification card
- Valid passport
- Valid military Identification
- Documentation
In the event that one or both applicants have been married before, they must bring a certified copy of their divorce papers with them as proof that they are no longer married.
Social Security Number
Both Applicants must present their Social Security cards for a marriage license to be issued. Replacement Social Security Cards can be obtained online at www.ssa.gov or by contacting the Social Security Administration at 1-800-722-1213 and usually takes a few weeks to receive. Applicants that are not eligible for a Social Security card may complete an affidavit attesting to this fact.
Please note: Social Security cards cannot be laminated or metal cards.
Fee
The fee for a marriage license is $60. The only form of payment accepted for a marriage license is cash, money order, or credit card.
Apply
Applications for marriage licenses are accepted between the hours of 8a.m. and 4:30p.m. Monday through Friday by appointment only.
